Since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, we've had more bachelorettes than ever. Clare, Tayshia, Katie, Michelle, Gabby, and Rachel have each been at the center of the franchise's most feminist show. And while much is left to be desired in the machinations of production, and many of the franchise's loudest voices belong to men, these women have been strong examples as they navigate complex emotional situations on the biggest stage.
So, what makes a good bachelorette? Here are the six qualities that make for a strong yet relatable lead.
Good Bachelorettes are good listeners:
Good bachelorettes listen to the men on their season and affirm them without making the moment about themselves. Listening with empathy, compassion, and concern can encourage the contestants to open up, which helps foster their connections.
Good bachelorettes are vulnerable:
While it would seem that being the lead with your pick of any man would mean that the bachelorette is protected from rejection, the last three episodes of this current season have proven that assumption to be false. A good bachelorette exposes her vulnerabilities to show her strengths. As the old Kanye once said, "Everything I'm not made me everything I am."
Good bachelorettes have hard conversations:
In the past two years, so many dormant issues that are embedded in our society finally became the forefront of national conversations. Good bachelorettes open up about these issues and navigate the discussions with all the complexity and nuance they deserve.
Good bachelorettes are decisive:
In the moments that matter, a good bachelorette stands up for herself and knows her worth. My all-time favorite moments of the show are when the lead enforces their boundaries and demands the respect they deserve.
Good bachelorettes are open:
No matter how formulaic the show can be, we all know that an unexpected curveball often gets thrown their way. A good bachelorette goes beyond their initial impressions of their cast to step out of their comfort zone by opening themselves up to their connections with the men they may not have seen coming.
Good bachelorettes have fun:
One of my favorite aspects of watching the show is seeing the lead have fun with being in charge! From hosting roasts, pageants, photo shoots, and sports competitions, I love to see the bachelorette laughing and joking and enjoying this unique experience granted to only a select few.
Six bachelorettes in the last four seasons have given us a variety of personalities, scenarios, and perspectives. Watching each of these women navigate their journeys both on screen and off has inspired many women to show up as our beautiful, messy, and unapologetic selves.
